Maelstrom
Maggie Heath
Maelstrom is a performative installation. During a time when emotions and housing options seem in a constant state of chaos for artist, Maggie Heath, she uses the “domestic” action of hand-sewing as a way to calm the mind and let the thread make connections. Surplus Space’s outdoor performance area and walkways will be covered in the result, while Heath will slowly be curling in the fabric, surrounding herself, and beckoning the viewer to take a closer look.
Bio
Maggie Heath is a Portland artist, who focuses on figurative and theatrical sculptural installations, with the use of labor-intensive processes. While growing up in Minnesota, Heath was a part of Ballet Minnesota’s academy, which continues to inform her interest in the figure and the settings that surround the body. Her work has shown at various spaces in Portland, including Timeshare Gallery, MK Gallery, PCC Casacde Gallery, and as part of a group project for the Portland’s Shine a Light at the Portland Art Museum.

Naked Cave
Omer Gal
Debuting Surplus Space's new garage screening room is San Francisco based artist Omer Gal with his 3 channel video Naked Cave. Naked Cave is a mobile 'living' object, which was built in 2011, it expands through time and adds to its characteristics with each new use. By rebuilding the cave in new locations and creating new art within it, it slowly gains meta qualities, like one steps into an old cave which has had a long history and feels a strong spiritual sensation, so the Naked Cave gains a spirit over time. The physical and metaphysical actions taken place such as video, sculpture, sound, performance or even just thoughts are all accumulated, documented and evaluated over time to exhibit its metamorphosis.
